You may be wondering why an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is the best choice for your tooth restoration and other oral health needs. Many dentists refer patients to oral surgeons because of their extensive, specialized training. Oral surgeons must complete years of training before treating patients in a private practice, and this training is what gives them the ability to provide you, the patient, with the safest and most advanced care. Here at Brazos Oral & Facial Surgery, we want you to feel assured that you are receiving the best treatment available to you, and our highly skilled oral surgeon relies on his years of experience and training to ensure you that you are. Below is some additional information about the way oral surgeons complete their training and continue their education to provide you with the best possible care.
There are a couple of different ways to become an oral surgeon. Upon completing dental school, future oral surgeons must choose a residency program approved by the American Dental Association’s Commission of Dental Accreditation. These programs vary in length from four to six years and include extensive training in a myriad of procedures, such as working with anesthesiologists to learn how to properly administer anesthesia. The second path involves earning a dual degree in both dentistry and medicine, meaning the surgeon would be a licensed practitioner of both oral surgery and medicine. This program, on average, takes six years to complete, as participants perform not only oral surgery but also surgeries that a typical surgical intern would perform. This additional training takes place after completing four years of dental school and four years of undergraduate studies. In short, both of these paths include years of training beyond what is typically required of other dental professionals, giving oral surgeons comprehensive skills that enable them to provide you with the best treatment.
Additionally, oral surgeons generally perform certain procedures, like dental implant placement and wisdom teeth removal, more often than other dental professionals typically do. This makes them more practiced and often more precise at these procedures. When it comes to something as important as your smile, choosing a doctor with the most training and experience can make a huge difference.
